Saint John the Wallachian
Martyr
Wallachia and Constantinople
Feast day: May 12

A life of faith
John was taken captive from Wallachia as a young teenager and brought to Constantinople. The calendar describes his resistance to sexual coercion and demands that he abandon Christian faith. Imprisoned and tortured, he maintained his confession until his execution. His story remembers the dignity and faith of a young person subjected to captivity and abuse.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
John’s example invites respect for human dignity and support for people facing coercion or abuse.
