Saint Joseph Gerontogiannis of Kapsa
Monk and spiritual guide
Lithines and Kapsa, Crete · 1799–1874
Feast day: August 7

A life of faith
Born John Vitsentzos near Kapsa, Joseph grew up in Lithines and married Kalliopi. The loss of a daughter became a turning point in his life. He later settled at the neglected monastery of Kapsa, where he helped restore the community and received visitors seeking counsel. In 1863 he received the monastic name Joseph. During unrest he moved with his companions to Agia Sophia monastery, which he also restored, before returning to Kapsa. The received account remembers his prayer and encouragement of people in distress. He died in 1874.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Grief does not make someone guilty. Joseph’s later life invites gentle support for bereaved people and patient work that helps a community recover.
