Saint Joseph the Hymnographer
Venerable Hymnographer
Sicily, Thessaloniki, and Constantinople
Feast day: April 4

A life of faith
Joseph entered monastic life at Thessaloniki after his family left Sicily. Gregory the Decapolite became his guide, and together they encouraged Christians who defended the veneration of icons. The received life describes imprisonment and exile, during which Joseph continued to encourage others. He later composed canons and hymns honoring Christ, the Theotokos, and the saints, helping shape the Church's daily worship. He also served in the care of sacred vessels and as a confessor. His work joined a gift for words to practical responsibility. Orthodox Christians remember both the hymns that sustained common prayer and the courage of their composer.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how words can encourage a community through difficulty. Joseph's memory connects artistic skill with responsibility for others and the shared prayer of the Church.
