Saint Julius the Veteran
Soldier and martyr
Roman Empire
Feast day: May 27

A life of faith
Julius was a veteran soldier brought before the prefect Maximus because he would not sacrifice to the gods. The prefect offered him money to comply. Julius refused to exchange his Christian confession for that reward. The calendar records his execution and remembers the firmness of his response to both threats and financial temptation.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Julius’s example invites you to consider which convictions should remain firm when a reward makes compromise attractive.
