Saint Justinian the Emperor
Righteous emperor
Byzantine Empire · 6th century
Feast day: August 2

A life of faith
Justinian was born at Tauresium and rose to imperial rule after his uncle Justin. His reign left a major legal and architectural legacy. The calendar recalls the building of churches, especially Hagia Sophia, and the ecumenical council held at Constantinople in 553. He died in 565.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Justinian’s remembrance raises the responsibilities that accompany public power. Consider whose needs are served by an institution’s rules and whose needs remain unheard.
