Saint Laurus of Illyria
Stoneworker and martyr
Ulpiana in Dardania · early Christian period
Feast day: August 18

A life of faith
Laurus and his twin brother Florus practised stoneworking in Dardania. Commissioned to construct a temple, they gave the money they received to poor people and maintained a life of prayer alongside their labour. The brothers joined other converts in destroying the temple’s idols. The calendar records their subsequent punishment and death in a deep well. Their joint account identifies both men’s shared work and generosity.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Laurus’s example invites generosity rooted in ordinary work and steady prayer.
