Saint Lawrence of Rome
Archdeacon and martyr
Rome
Feast day: August 10

A life of faith
Lawrence served as archdeacon at Rome and helped distribute the offerings of Christians to people in need. During Valerian’s persecution he witnessed the martyrdom of Bishop Sixtus. The calendar remembers Lawrence distributing the church’s property before it could be confiscated. He was arrested, tortured and killed.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Lawrence’s service asks how the resources entrusted to us can reach people who need them.
