Saint Lazar the Martyr of Bulgaria
Shepherd and martyr
Gabrovo region and Soma near Pergamum
Feast day: April 23

A life of faith
Lazar came from the Gabrovo region and worked as a shepherd near Soma in Asia Minor. The received life remembers him protecting a passerby from the flock’s dog. After a dispute he was imprisoned and pressured to abandon his Christian faith. He refused and was killed in 1802. Christians later buried him and preserved his memory.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
