A life of faith

Orthodox tradition identifies Longinus with the centurion who witnessed Christ's death and confessed that Jesus was the Son of God. The Gospel describes the confession but does not name the soldier. The Church's later account follows Longinus into Christian baptism, departure from military service, and preaching in Cappadocia with two companions. It remembers him receiving the men sent to arrest him with hospitality before acknowledging his identity. He and his companions were then killed. His commemoration centers on a change of allegiance: a man stationed at the Crucifixion became a witness to Christ and shared that faith with others.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider where a change of conviction should change your actions. Longinus's received story connects recognition of Christ with a new direction and an openly confessed faith.
