A life of faith

Luke, born Valentin Voyno-Yasenetsky, chose medicine because he wanted to help people who could not afford care. He became a surgeon and continued treating patients after his ordination as a priest and bishop. Soviet imprisonment and exile interrupted his life repeatedly, but did not end his medical service. During the Second World War he cared for wounded soldiers, while his scientific work earned public recognition. As Archbishop of Simferopol, he joined pastoral responsibility with concern for suffering people. His life shows how professional skill, perseverance, and Christian compassion can serve the same human need.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider the skill you can offer someone who is struggling. Use that skill carefully, respect the person’s dignity, and remember that faithful service can continue even under difficult circumstances.
