Saint Luke the Evangelist
Apostle, evangelist & physician
Antioch & Mediterranean lands · 1st century
Feast day: October 18; April 22

A life of faith
Luke is honored as a physician, companion of Paul, and author of the Gospel bearing his name and the Acts of the Apostles. His Gospel opens with a commitment to a careful account of what Christians had received about Jesus. Acts continues the story through the preaching of the apostles and the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church. The OCA life emphasizes Luke’s loyalty when other companions had left Paul. Church tradition also remembers him as an iconographer. His witness connects attentive learning, faithful friendship, and the patient work of handing on the Gospel.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
