Saint Lydia of Philippi
Equal-to-the-Apostles
Philippi · 1st century
Feast day: May 20 (Greek usage); March 23 (Slavic usage)

A life of faith
Lydia was a seller of purple goods from Thyatira who encountered Paul’s preaching at a place of prayer near Philippi. Acts describes her listening attentively and receiving the message with an open heart. She and her household were baptized, and she urged the missionaries to accept the hospitality of her home. The Church honors her as Equal-to-the-Apostles. Lydia’s story places ordinary resources at the beginning of a community’s growth: a businesswoman’s attention, home, and generosity became part of the Gospel’s welcome in Macedonia. Her faith took visible form through hospitality.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Look for a simple way to make someone welcome. Offer attention, a place at the table, or practical support that helps another person take a step toward community.
