A life of faith

Macarius of Alexandria worked in trade before baptism and withdrawal into the Egyptian desert. He became a priest and a guide of monks in the region known as the Cells. His life is distinct from that of his contemporary and friend Macarius of Egypt. The OCA account remembers vigorous ascetic efforts but also small acts of generosity, including grapes given to a sick monk that passed through the community until they returned to him. He struggled against the desire for personal recognition. Orthodox remembrance therefore joins disciplined prayer with a concern that even religious achievement should not become a source of pride.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Offer a small good thing to another person without expecting credit. Notice whether the wish to appear spiritual is interfering with the simpler work of love.
