Saint Macarius the Confessor
Abbot and confessor
Constantinople, Pelekete and Aphousia
Feast day: April 1

A life of faith
Macarius was born in Constantinople and was known as Christopher before entering the monastery of Pelekete. He served the community in many practical needs and later became its leader. His received life recounts healings of sick people and his ordination by Patriarch Tarasius. During the persecution over icons under Leo the Armenian, he was imprisoned. After his release, he resisted pressure to change his faith and was exiled to the island of Aphousia, where he died.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
