Saint Macarius the Great
Venerable desert father
Scetis, Egypt · 4th century
Feast day: January 19

A life of faith
Macarius cared for his aging parents before entering the desert life and learning from experienced spiritual guides. The Church remembers his association with Anthony the Great and his later leadership among the monks of Scetis. His traditional life repeatedly emphasizes humility and mercy, including his refusal to let insult or praise govern his conduct. He also sought wisdom from faithful people outside the monastery, recognizing that holiness was not confined to one form of life. Macarius’s witness joins prayer with a generous regard for the neighbor, resisting the temptation to turn spiritual effort into superiority.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
