Saint Marcellus of the Unsleeping Ones
Venerable Abbot
Apamea, Ephesus, and Constantinople
Feast day: December 29

A life of faith
Marcellus received an education after losing his parents and distributed his inherited possessions to poor people. He later joined Alexander's monastery near Constantinople, where alternating groups of monks maintained continuous psalmody. After serving the community and learning from other monasteries, he eventually became abbot. As the community grew, he used donations to enlarge its facilities and build a hospital and lodging for homeless people. The OCA also remembers his refusal to surrender a servant accused unjustly by a powerful master. His commemoration joins organized prayer with material care and the responsibility of protecting a vulnerable person despite pressure on the community.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider whether a community's resources meet needs beyond its own members. Marcellus's hospital and lodging connect spiritual leadership with concrete provision for vulnerable people.
