A life of faith

Marcian served as a soldier before becoming emperor. The calendar remembers him together with Pulcheria, whom he married after the death of her brother Theodosius. Its account describes their commitment to Christian life and their shared rule during disputes affecting the Church.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Marcian’s shared commemoration invites study of personal responsibility within public office.
