Saint Mardarije of Libertyville
Bishop
Montenegro and North America · 19th–20th centuries
Feast day: December 12

A life of faith
Mardarije Uskokovic was born in Montenegro and entered monastic life while young. After theological study and ministry in Russia, he was sent to North America in 1917 to serve the Serbian Orthodox mission. He organized congregations and founded Saint Sava Monastery in Libertyville, Illinois. Consecrated bishop in 1926, he continued building church life while facing opposition and serious illness. The Serbian Church’s account emphasizes his humility, selflessness, and forgiveness toward those who resisted his work. He died in 1935 after suffering from tuberculosis. His formal glorification in 2017 brought Orthodox Christians together at the monastery that had become central to his ministry.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Build something useful for a community without making praise the reward. When opposition arises, seek patience and a measured response while still caring for your own health.
