Saint Maron of Syria
Hermit & spiritual teacher
Cyrrhus in Syria · 4th–5th centuries
Feast day: February 14

A life of faith
Maron lived near Cyrrhus in Syria and embraced a life of prayer and ascetic discipline, often beneath the open sky. People came to him for healing and counsel. The OCA life remembers his teaching about moderation and his warnings against greed and anger. His influence continued through disciples, including Domnina, and through monastic communities around Cyrrhus. He was also remembered as a friend of John Chrysostom. His commemoration honors devotion that became guidance for others, linking withdrawal for prayer with concern for the habits that shape everyday relationships and the use of possessions.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
