Saint Martin of Tours
Merciful bishop & monastic father
Pannonia & Gaul · 4th century
Feast day: November 11

A life of faith
Martin served in the Roman army while still preparing for baptism. His best-known traditional story describes him dividing his cloak to warm a beggar at Amiens, followed by a vision of Christ wearing the gift. He later left military service, pursued monastic life, and became Bishop of Tours. He continued living simply while caring for the Church and people in poverty. Martin’s witness gives mercy a concrete beginning: he responded to a person’s cold before possessing a complete understanding of his own future. The Church remembers a bishop whose generosity remained central to his calling.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
