Saint Mary Magdalene
Myrrhbearer & equal to the apostles
Galilee & Jerusalem · 1st century
Feast day: July 22

A life of faith
Mary Magdalene followed Christ after receiving healing from him and supported his ministry alongside other women. The Gospel accounts place her at the Crucifixion and among those who came to the tomb. In John’s Gospel she encounters the risen Lord and carries his message to the disciples. The Orthodox Church honors her as a myrrhbearer and equal to the apostles. Her faithfulness did not depend on public success or an easy ending. Mary’s witness brings together gratitude, courage in grief, and the readiness to share a hope that first transformed her own life.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Read John 20 with attention to Mary’s grief and recognition. Consider how steady presence can support someone in sorrow, even when you cannot explain or remove the suffering.
