Saint Mary, Niece of Abraham
Monastic woman
Near Edessa
Feast day: October 29

A life of faith
Mary was orphaned as a child and came under the care of her uncle Abraham near Edessa. The traditional account remembers a period of estrangement and despair after which Abraham found her and reassured her of God’s mercy. She returned to prayer and monastic life and outlived her uncle by five years.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Mary’s remembrance invites hope that shame and estrangement need not have the final word.
