Saint Matrona of Hurezi
Venerable Abbess
Sărăcinești and Hurezi, Romania
Feast day: May 5

A life of faith
Matrona, born Maria Ciupelea, entered monastic life at Sărăcinești before moving to Hurezi. There she received guidance from Orest, a disciple of Calinic of Cernica. Her counsel became valued within the community, and she was elected abbess late in life. Basilica's official account remembers a sustained monastic vocation developed through learning, prayer, and responsibility for other sisters. Her commemoration belongs to the Romanian Church's recent recognition of women whose influence was carried within a particular community rather than through a widely publicized career.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Value the experience of someone who has served a community quietly for many years. Matrona's remembered counsel preceded her formal appointment as abbess.
