A life of faith

Matthias followed Christ during his earthly ministry and was chosen after the Ascension to take the place left among the Twelve. The account in Acts presents that choice within the prayer of the gathered believers. His traditional life remembers preaching with other apostles, repeated danger, and continued witness to Christ beyond Jerusalem. The Church honors him as a martyr, while the source notes differing traditions about where and how he died. Matthias’s example gives dignity to faithful readiness: a person may serve quietly for a long time before being called to a new responsibility.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Attend faithfully to a responsibility that receives little notice. Ask for readiness to serve when a new need appears, without treating recognition as the measure of your work.
