Saint Maxima, Wife of Montanus
Martyr
Singidunum & Sirmium · early 4th century
Feast day: March 26

A life of faith
Maxima was the wife of the priest Montanus. When Montanus was tortured for refusing pagan sacrifice, the governor Probus summoned her, hoping she would persuade her husband to give in. The received account instead describes her willingness to share his witness. Probus condemned both of them to death by drowning. The Church commemorates Maxima with Montanus.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Maxima was asked to use a close relationship to pressure someone’s conscience. Consider how you can support another person without taking control of the person’s choices.
