Saint Maximus the Confessor
Monk & theologian
Eastern Mediterranean · 6th–7th centuries
Feast day: January 21

A life of faith
Maximus became a monk and a major interpreter of Christian teaching about Christ, worship, and the transformation of human life by grace. He defended the confession that Christ possesses a fully human will as well as a divine will, refusing an imperial demand to silence the dispute. That commitment brought trial, mutilation, and exile. His writings range from explanations of difficult theology to reflection on love and prayer. The Church honors him as a confessor whose costly witness protected the meaning of Christ’s humanity. Intellectual precision and a life directed toward God meet in his example.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Study a difficult point of faith patiently rather than settling for a slogan. Ask how a clearer understanding of Christ might help you act with more love and integrity.
