A life of faith

Meletios was born Emmanuel in Lardos on Rhodes toward the end of the eighteenth century. He learned to read from his parish priest and sought a life of prayer near the neglected monastery of Ypseni. The monastery’s account remembers him rebuilding its church and cells, becoming a priest and serving as abbot. He visited villages to hear confessions and encourage people through hardship. He also gave necessities to people in poverty, welcomed pilgrims and sheltered people fleeing persecution. His life is remembered through the community he restored and the people he supported.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Useful help begins with a concrete need. Offer food, a safe place or time to listen, according to what you can responsibly provide.
