Saint Meletius of Antioch
Archbishop & teacher
Armenia & Antioch · 4th century
Feast day: February 12

A life of faith
Meletius served as bishop of Sebaste before becoming archbishop of Antioch during the conflicts over Arian teaching. Repeated removal and exile interrupted his ministry, but the OCA life particularly remembers his gentleness. He sought to teach through a kind manner and the example of his own life. He encouraged John Chrysostom and maintained connections with other major teachers of the Church. Later he traveled to Constantinople and presided at the beginning of the Second Ecumenical Council, dying during its proceedings. His commemoration joins doctrinal conviction with patient leadership and a refusal to make harshness the measure of faithfulness.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how you communicate a firm conviction. Practice a clear explanation with a gentle manner, and listen before assuming disagreement is caused by bad intent.
