Saint Micah of Moresheth
Prophet
Judah · 8th century BC
Feast day: August 14

A life of faith
Micah came from Moresheth in Judah and prophesied in the same broad period as Isaiah. His ministry addressed the kingdoms of Judah and Israel under the shadow of Assyrian power. The biblical book bearing his name contains warnings of judgment and the promise of a ruler from Bethlehem, a passage Orthodox Christians receive in relation to Christ’s birth. Jeremiah’s book also recalls Micah’s preaching when people debate how to respond to a prophet’s unwelcome words. His commemoration belongs to this particular biblical figure, rather than to every prophet whose name appears as Micah or Micaiah in English.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Listen carefully when a warning challenges comfort or status. Test the warning with humility, and choose a responsible change rather than an angry dismissal.
