Saint Modestus of Jerusalem
Patriarch
Jerusalem & Palestine
Feast day: December 18

A life of faith
Modestus was abbot of the Monastery of Saint Theodosius in Palestine. When Patriarch Zacharias of Jerusalem was taken into exile, Modestus was entrusted with care of the diocese. After Zacharias died, Modestus became patriarch. The calendar remembers his defense of the Orthodox faith and peaceful death.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Modestus accepted responsibility during another leader’s absence. Consider how you can offer steady care when a community faces disruption.
