Saint Montanus the Priest
Priest and martyr
Singidunum & Sirmium · early 4th century
Feast day: March 26

A life of faith
Montanus was a Christian priest from Singidunum and the husband of Maxima. During persecution he went to Sirmium, where he was arrested and brought before the governor Probus. The received account describes his refusal to offer sacrifice to the gods despite repeated threats and torture. Maxima was summoned in the hope that she would persuade him to comply, but the two remained faithful. They were condemned to drowning. Before his death, Montanus prayed for the Christian community.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Montanus remembered his community even while facing danger. Consider whose needs you can hold in prayer during a difficult period of your own.
