Saint Nectarius of Bitola
Monk
Bitola and Karyes on Mount Athos
Feast day: December 5 (Bulgarian Church)

A life of faith
Nectarius was born in Bitola and was baptized Nicholas. He first lived at a monastery near his home town with his father, who became the monk Pachomius. He later went to Mount Athos and received monastic guidance from Philotheus and Dionysius at Karyes. The received life describes a period away from their cell after another novice threatened him, followed by his return to Dionysius. They supported themselves through manual work. Nectarius died in 1500.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
