Saint Neilos of Sinai
Monastic writer
Constantinople & Sinai · 4th–5th centuries
Feast day: November 12

A life of faith
Neilos was educated in Constantinople and held public responsibility before entering monastic life. The traditional account describes that change as a mutual decision with his wife, with their children also joining monastic communities. On Sinai he lived with his son Theodoulos and offered counsel to people from many occupations. His writings explained the ascetic life and defended John Chrysostom against unjust treatment. He also endured the capture of his son and their eventual reunion. His commemoration remembers prayer and clear teaching offered to people beyond the boundaries of a solitary life.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
