A life of faith

Neophytus was born at Lefkara in Cyprus and entered the Monastery of Saint John Chrysostom. Having received little schooling as a child, he learned to read and write in the monastery and studied Scripture and the Fathers. He later settled in a cave near Paphos, called the Enkleistra. Disciples gathered around him, and he taught visitors and left many writings.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Neophytus learned patiently after a limited childhood education. Set aside time to study one text carefully rather than trying to master everything at once.
