Saint Niceta of Remesiana
Bishop and teacher
Remesiana & the Danube region
Feast day: June 24

A life of faith
Niceta was bishop of Remesiana, south of the Danube. The received life remembers his preaching among several peoples of the region and his efforts to help new Christians understand the faith. His writings, preserved in whole or in part, include six catechetical addresses for people preparing for baptism, together with writings on Christ, vigils and the singing of psalms. He used worship and instruction together in the life of his communities. During visits to Nola, he became a friend of Paulinus, who honored his missionary work in poems. Niceta’s remembrance connects Christian teaching with the patient work of making unfamiliar words and practices understandable.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
