Saint Nicholas the New of Sofia
Shoemaker and martyr
Ioannina and Sofia · 16th century
Feast day: May 17

A life of faith
Nicholas learned the shoemaker’s trade and settled in Sofia, where he married and raised a family. The received life remembers his visits and gifts to poor people and prisoners. After a period in Wallachia he returned to Sofia. The account describes religious coercion, imprisonment and his refusal to abandon Christianity. He was killed in 1555.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
