A life of faith

Nikephoros served at the imperial court before entering monastic life and becoming Patriarch of Constantinople in 806. He defended the veneration of icons when renewed imperial opposition threatened the Church's worship. Leo V removed him from office and sent him into exile in 815. The OCA remembers three writings against iconoclasm, preserving his contribution as a teacher as well as a confessor. His remains were later returned to Constantinople and honored in the city's principal churches. His commemoration recalls a patriarch whose theological work continued to serve the Church after political power had deprived him of his public position.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider how a conviction can be explained clearly when institutional support is lost. Nikephoros's writings preserved teaching that did not depend on keeping a powerful office.
