A life of faith

Nikodemos was born on Naxos and received an education in both church and secular learning before becoming a monk on Mount Athos. His work with Makarios of Corinth helped prepare the Philokalia for publication, making writings on prayer and spiritual life available to a wider readership. He also edited patristic texts, collected saints' lives, explained hymns, and prepared books on confession and Christian conduct. The OCA remembers both his learning and his unassuming manner. When illness limited his work, he asked others to help publish the remaining manuscripts. He died in 1809, leaving a broad contribution to Orthodox study and worship.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Use something you have learned to help another person understand the faith. Nikodemos's work also invites humility about the collaborators needed to complete a useful task.
