A life of faith

The Orthodox life of Obadiah identifies the prophet with the royal steward who protected and fed prophets threatened during Jezebel’s persecution. In that received account, responsibility inside a hostile court became an opportunity to shelter people in danger. The life also associates him with Elijah and remembers his departure from royal service. The brief prophetic book bearing his name speaks of judgment and the future of Zion. These connections belong to the Church’s traditional account; Scripture does not supply a complete biography establishing every identification. His commemoration nevertheless preserves a clear image of courageous protection offered to vulnerable people.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Use whatever responsibility you hold to protect someone vulnerable. Offer quiet, practical support without turning another person’s danger into a story about your own courage.
