Saint Olga of Kyiv
Ruler & equal to the apostles
Kyivan Rus · 10th century
Feast day: July 11

A life of faith
Olga governed Kyivan Rus after the death of her husband Igor. Her earlier rule belongs to a world of political conflict and harsh retaliation, while her later baptism marked a decisive personal turn toward Christianity. She received the baptismal name Helen and supported the presence of the Church in a society that remained largely pagan. Her son did not follow her faith, but her example preceded the later conversion associated with her grandson Vladimir. The Church honors her as equal to the apostles for her role in preparing that Christian future, rather than endorsing every act of her political life.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how a changed conviction should change the use of power. Seek patience when those close to you do not share your faith, while expressing your own commitment with care.
