A life of faith

Onesimus was enslaved in Philemon’s household before meeting Paul in Rome and becoming a Christian. Paul’s letter asked Philemon to receive him as a brother, placing their relationship within a new claim of love and dignity. The OCA life remembers Onesimus serving Paul, continuing apostolic work, and eventually becoming a bishop. He is honored as a martyr for his confession of Christ. His story invites attention to the way the Gospel changes how people regard one another: a human being’s worth cannot be reduced to social position, past conflict, or usefulness.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Notice where you value someone mainly for a role or service. Offer respect to the whole person, and consider one action that supports that person’s dignity and freedom.
