Saint Onuphrius the Great
Venerable hermit
Thebaid, Egypt · 4th century
Feast day: June 12

A life of faith
Onuphrius is remembered through the traditional account of Paphnutius, who traveled into the Egyptian wilderness to learn from hermits. Onuphrius had first lived in a monastery and received guidance from an elder before spending many years in solitude. He welcomed Paphnutius, spoke of prayer and God’s care, and asked to be remembered by other Christians. Before his death he directed the visitor to return to his own community rather than remain in the desert. His witness honors a life of prayer while recognizing that different people are called to different forms of faithful service.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Set aside a short time for quiet prayer that fits your responsibilities. Receive another person’s example with gratitude, without assuming that your own calling must take the same form.
