Saint Pachomius the Great
Venerable founder of communal monastic life
Upper Egypt · 4th century
Feast day: May 15

A life of faith
Pachomius first encountered Christian kindness when believers brought food and care to military conscripts held under guard. Their actions moved him toward baptism. After learning from the hermit Palamon, he established a monastic community at Tabennisi, where prayer and work served a shared life. He cared especially for sick monks and adjusted fasting when recovery required it. The Church remembers him as a major founder of communal monasticism. Pachomius’s example shows how practical kindness can begin a vocation, and how good leadership combines clear responsibility with mercy toward the weakness of others.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Notice one shared responsibility that needs clearer care. Help make the task workable for everyone, especially someone whose illness or limited strength requires a different pace.
