Saint Paisius of Hilandar
Monk & historian
Bulgaria & Mount Athos · 18th century
Feast day: June 19

A life of faith
Paisius was born in Bansko into a family closely connected with Orthodox churches and monasteries. After experience at Rila monastery, he went to Hilandar on Mount Athos, where his brother was abbot. He became a monk and priest and devoted himself to Scripture and study. In 1762 he completed a history of the Slavo-Bulgarians that encouraged Christian faith and a renewed awareness of Bulgarian heritage. The exact circumstances of his death remain unknown. His commemoration remembers a scholar whose writing sought to strengthen a people’s memory, dignity, and responsibility for the faith they had received.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how history can be studied truthfully and shared clearly. Preserve your community’s memory without turning love of heritage into hostility toward another people.
