Saint Patrick of Ireland
Bishop & enlightener
Britain & Ireland · 5th century
Feast day: March 17

A life of faith
Patrick was taken captive as a teenager and enslaved in Ireland. During those years he learned the language and turned often to prayer. After returning home, he prepared for ministry and later went back to Ireland as a bishop and missionary. His writings remember hardship, opposition, and gratitude for God’s help rather than personal greatness. The Church honors his work of forming communities and teaching the Gospel. Patrick’s witness gives a strong image of perseverance and humble service, as a place once connected with suffering became the setting of a life devoted to other people.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Pray for a place or person connected with a difficult memory. Seek wise support, and consider a free, realistic act of goodness without forcing yourself back into harm.
