Saint Paula of Nicomedia
Martyr
Nicomedia and Byzantium
Feast day: June 3

A life of faith
Paula was an orphan from Nicomedia who used her inheritance to provide food, clothing and medicine for prisoners. She buried Lucillian and his companions after their deaths. Returning to Byzantium, she preached Christianity and continued to help people in need. She was arrested and suffered martyrdom.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Paula makes care for prisoners concrete: food, clothing, medicine and dignified burial.
