Saint Perpetua of Carthage
Martyr
Carthage in North Africa
Feast day: February 1

A life of faith
Perpetua was a young mother and catechumen when she was imprisoned with other Christians at Carthage. The account remembers her relief when she could nurse her child in prison. Despite pressure from her family and the authorities, she refused to abandon her Christian faith. She and her companions were condemned and killed in the amphitheater.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Perpetua’s remembrance invites reflection on the practical support that parents and families need during hardship.
