Saint Peter of Dabar-Bosnia
Metropolitan and martyr
Grahovo, Mostar and Sarajevo
Feast day: September 17 (Gregorian); September 4 (Julian)

A life of faith
Peter Zimonjić was born in Grahovo in 1866 and became a monk and bishop. He served in Herzegovina before becoming metropolitan of Dabar-Bosnia. When war began, he chose to remain with his people rather than leave his diocese. He was arrested in May 1941 and taken into captivity. Accounts differ about where he was killed, and his place of death remains uncertain. The Serbian Church recognized him as a martyr in 1998.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
People who carry responsibilities also need support and safety. Offer practical help without asking anyone to put themselves in danger.
