Saint Phanourius of Rhodes
Martyr
Rhodes
Feast day: August 27

A life of faith
The remembrance of Phanourius is closely connected with an icon discovered in the ruins of a church on Rhodes. The calendar describes the bishop identifying the martyr by the inscription and scenes of suffering. Later traditions recall his preaching and martyrdom and the prayers offered in his name. The account preserves a devotion whose earliest personal chronology remains uncertain.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
