Saint Philemon the Musician
Musician and martyr
Thebaid, Egypt
Feast day: December 14

A life of faith
Philemon was a flute player whom the frightened Christian reader Apollonius paid to sacrifice in his place. Wearing Apollonius’s clothes, Philemon instead confessed Christ and resisted repeated demands to recant. His received life recounts his prayer and a miraculous rain associated with baptism. Philemon and Apollonius were both tortured and beheaded.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Make a thoughtful choice for yourself rather than accepting a role that conflicts with your conscience.
